Monk historians in Mandalay


On the 5th of January, 2012, Burmese writers, researchers and reporters gather near Mandalay to commemorate birth anniversaries of the local monk historians (hsayadaws).

Ko Pannya from Amarapoora who hosted literary events and memorial stones in his monastery near Taungthaman Lake, resisting the junta’s pressure for years.

The monks with magnanimous knowledge on Burmese arts and archaeology and served as local pundits for foreign researchers since 1950s, contributing their research articles in Burmese press. Long live the trend of Burmese traditional scholars who passed treasures from the old feudal courts and monasteries to the public and academia!
